Fort Bragg , North Carolina, officials closed a base gate for much of Wednesday afternoon after highway workers discovered 155mm artillery rounds in the area, according to an installation news release.

An explosive ordnance disposal team, firefighters and military police responded to the discovery, which was made by a crew taking part in an ongoing Interstate 295 construction project near the North Carolina base's Yadkin Road Access Control Point.

A base spokesman told the Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer that the four shells discovered were 10 to 20 years old and that base officials weren't sure how they got there. Plans called for the ordnance's removal and eventual detonation, according to the newspaper; a Facebook post on the base's official page gave the all-clear after 4 p.m.:

Parts of Yadkin Road and the Yadkin Road gate have been closed intermittently in recent months because of the ongoing construction, with some closures lengthened by storm damage. A closure last week allowed workers to clear mud off the road.
