A Fort Riley soldier died in Junction City, Kansas, on Sunday, according to the Army.

Pvt. Dakota Noah was an infantryman with Company B, 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

The 21-year-old died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Geary County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday, Geary County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Grandview Plaza Police Department officers were dispatched after a third-party report of “an armed and possibly suicidal subject inside a vehicle,” according to the sheriff’s office.

When the deputies and officers arrived at the scene, they attempted to communicate with Noah, who was sitting inside a vehicle parked in an access driveway. Shortly afterward, Noah shot himself. He was transported to the Geary Community Hospital, where he later died, the sheriff’s office said.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Pvt. Noah,” Col. Charles Masaracchia, the 1st ID’s chief of staff, said in a release. “The ‘Big Red One’ and the ‘Dagger’ brigade are dedicated to supporting his friends and family in this difficult time.”

Noah joined the Army in September 2016 and had been at Fort Riley since January 2017. He had no deployments.

His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
