Sgt. Jason Alan Luong, an award-winning Army broadcaster, died of a terminal illness Feb. 18 in Seoul, South Korea, according to officials at Fort Hood, Texas.

Luong, 36, was en route to a new assignment in South Korea when he died, officials said. The nature of his illness was not released.

He most recently served with Headquarters Support Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, III Corps, Fort Hood, as a Public Affairs broadcast specialist, according to a release from Fort Hood. He was assigned there in January 2013.

Luong had deployed three times: for Operation Iraqi Freedom from November 2004 to November 2005 and from December 2007 to February 2009, and for Operation Enduring Freedom from February 2011 to January 2012, according to the release.

He entered active-duty service in 1997 as a motor transport operator.

In April last year, Luong was named as one of the winners of the Keith L. Ware awards for excellence in Army journalism, receiving first place in the audio information category for "Fort Hood Spotlight."

He was serving as III Corps public affairs broadcast NCO and FortHoodRadio.com station NCOIC.

"It's been phenomenal," Luong told the Fort Hood Herald then. "It's by far one of the best jobs that I have ever held. ... It's great to be able to basically give back to the community ... and get the information out there."

Luong's awards and decorations include five Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, three Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign star, two Afghanistan Campaign Medals with campaign star, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, three Overseas Service Ribbons, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" device, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, Basic Marksmanship Qualification Badge and Driver and Mechanic badge.

He is survived by his spouse and children, officials said.
