Hurley, a 1984 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, serves as command chaplain for 18th Airborne Corps in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, according to a news release from the Archdiocese for the Military Services. Past assignments have included deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hurley was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1995. He will replace Chaplain (Maj. Gen.) Donald Rutherford, who plans to retire, the release states. Rutherford has served in the post since July 2011.
