A 28-year-old military policeman stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia, shot and killed himself Sunday during an off-base encounter with a Georgia law enforcement official, an autopsy revealed Wednesday.

Owens pulled a pistol during the confrontation. The ranger shot and wounded Owens before the soldier shot himself in the head, according to the GBI and local media reports. He died of his injuries after being taken to a local hospital.

Owens, of Montgomery, Alabama, had served at Fort Gordon since October 2011, according to information provided by the installation, including most recently as an MP with 32nd Military Police Detachment (Criminal Investigation Division). He enlisted in 2007 and served a yearlong tour in Iraq that ended in July 2010.

His awards include an Army Achievement Medal and an Army Good Conduct Medal.

The incident remains under investigation, according to the GBI release.
