Police arrested a Fort Stewart soldier Monday and charged him with killing his wife, who also served on the Georgia base, less than two weeks after he told officers that she'd shot herself.

Spc. Perry Lee Hatcher Jr., with 3rd Infantry Division, remained in Liberty County jail as of Thursday, according to the jail's online inmate registry. Hatcher, 22, married Spc. Dashea (McClary) Hatcher, 23, earlier this year, shortly after her return from an Afghanistan deployment that spanned most of 2013, according to her online obituary.

The couple had an infant son. When police officers arrived at the Hatcher residence Nov. 5, after receiving a report of a suicide attempt, Perry Hatcher greeted them "at the doorway ... and he was holding his [redacted] baby," according to a Hinesville Police Department report.

The men "went upstairs to check the condition of Mrs. Hatcher," the report states, where one of the officers observed "what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the face" and a black pistol in her lap.

Hinesville PD detectives took over the investigation, and eight days after the incident, a warrant was issued for Perry Hatcher's arrest.

Dashea Hatcher joined the Army in March 2012, according to her obituary. Fort Stewart was her first duty station.
