A Fort Stewart, Georgia, soldier turned himself into authorities to face murder charges Monday, making him the third person charged in the murder of a 21-year-old found on Dec. 23.

Spc. Bradley Bates, 22, faces charges of murder, malice murder and possession of a firearm. The military police officer stands accused of killing William Whitsett, whose body was discovered in a construction site near the interaction of King George Boulevard and Highway 204 nearly a month ago. A Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police press release said an autopsy indicated he had been shot.

Bates has served in the Army for three years and been stationed at Fort Stewart for about one. A Fort Stewart spokesman said neither Kevin Palmer, 23, nor Genevieve Meeks, 20, the other two charged in connection with the death, have a known connection to the Army.

The first two suspects were initially arrested on Christmas and booked on marijuana possession of more than one ounce and possession with intent to distribute among other charges. SCMP added the same murder charges faced by bates, according to a Jan. 18 press release.

Meeks was denied bond in court on Wednesday; his next appearance is on Feb. 5.
