SAVANNAH, Ga. — A federal jury has convicted an Alabama man of murder in the slaying of a Fort Stewart soldier who was beaten with a baseball bat on government property near the Georgia Army post.

The Savannah Morning News reports jurors in U.S. District Court took less than an hour Thursday to convict 43-year-old Carl Evan Swain of Jasper, Alabama, in the 2013 killing of his brother-in-law, Army Spc. John Eubank.

Prosecutors say Swain and his sister, who was Eubank's wife, planned the killing to collect $500,000 in life insurance payments and benefits. Lillie Mae Eubank is scheduled to stand trial separately.

Swain never testified. His defense attorney, Edward Tolley, told jurors Swain "firmly and repeatedly denies his involvement" in the slaying.

Swain faces a life sentence for the soldier's death.
