Family of N.D. soldier missing in Korean War to get his medals

WHITE SHIELD, N.D. — The family of a North Dakota soldier deemed missing in action during the Korean War is receiving his medals and awards.

The ceremony honoring Cpl. Elmer Bear is scheduled Saturday afternoon in White Shield, where his family members will receive his Purple Heart and additional military awards. Bear is from the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.

Bear was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. Authorities say his unit was attacked by Chinese forces on Nov. 25, 1950, at the international boundary between the Koreas and China.

Bear is among more than 7,800 Americans who remain unaccounted for from the Korean War, including 27 from North Dakota.

Bear was married and had a son. Both his wife and son have since died. He is survived by four siblings.
