San Diego-based sailors hoping to catch the Navy Midshipmen in action at the Poinsettia Bowl later this month may have some locals to contend with.

The San Diego State Aztecs accepted the bowl's invitation on Sunday to take on the Mids, creating a rematch of the 2010 game, which SDSU won 35-14.

The Aztecs (7-5, 5-3 Mountain West Conference) are 3-0 all-time against the Mids, who enter Saturday's Army-Navy game with a 6-5 record.

The teams nearly became more regular opponents, as San Diego State was announced in 2011 as a future football-only member of what was then the Big East. Navy signed on soon after for a 2015 debut, but a series of conference shake-ups left SDSU in the Mountain West and Navy heading to the renamed American Athletic Conference next year.

Navy accepted an invitation to the Poinsettia Bowl, sponsored by San Diego County Credit Union, following its victory against South Alabama on Nov. 28. The win guaranteed the Mids a .500 record on the regular season, making them bowl-eligible.

The bowl kicks off Dec. 23 at 9:30 p.m. Eastern (6:30 p.m. Pacific) at Qualcomm Stadium, home of the NFL's San Diego Chargers, and will air on ESPN.

The Mids aren't the only academy on the postseason slate: Air Force, which beat Navy 30-21 and lost to San Diego State 30-14 this season, will face Western Michigan in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise on Dec. 20 at 5:45 p.m. It's one of five games on the first day of college football bowl season, and one of four airing on ESPN; click here for a full schedule.
