A soldier from U.S. Army Alaska died Monday in a motorcycle crash, officials announced late Wednesday.
Spc. Frederick Jenkins III, 24, died about 7 p.m. on Monday after his motorcycle crashed in a tunnel on the Portage Glacier Highway.
Jenkins was flown to Providence Alaska Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
Jenkins, who was from Columbus, Georgia, joined the Army in January 2012. He completed training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he graduated as an information technology specialist.
Jenkins reported to Alaska in October 2012 and was assigned to U.S. Army Alaska's 725th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Jenkins is one of at least five soldiers to die over the holiday weekend. Pfc. Holden Jeffrey Philbrook, a 19-year-old stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, also died in a motorcycle accident, and three soldiers from Fort Hood, Texas, died in a three-day span.
Warrant Officer Sean Michael Young, 35, died Sunday of an apparent gunshot wound at his off-post residence; Capt. Lakito Tarraze Bynum, 36, died Saturday while serving with a civil affairs team in El Salvador; and Spc. Jason Darryl Kane, 24, died Monday after the pickup truck he was riding in crashed en route to a hospital.
