Fisher House Foundation and the Department of Veterans Affairs are on track to open six new Fisher Houses across the U.S. in 2020, allowing more than 100 more families to stay in safe, comfortable lodging for free on any given night while their loved one undergoes care at VA medical centers.
Military service people are our original frontline workers. They are ready to make the ultimate sacrifice for our country. And though we don’t often see the work they do, they’re essential to maintaining our national safety and security, and they deserve our utmost respect. That’s why I want to take this moment during National Veteran and Military Families Month to salute America’s active-duty soldiers and military veterans.
David Ortiz was never afraid of a challenge. He was an avid outdoorsman before he joined the Army and became a Kiowa helicopter pilot in the 82nd Airborne Division’s Combat Aviation Brigade. In Eastern Afghanistan, Kiowa pilots took a lot of risk to protect the guys on the ground, and, in February 2012, David suffered a hard landing that destroyed his aircraft, broke his legs, and inflicted extreme trauma on his spine, throat, and lungs.
