FORT JACKSON, S.C. — A Fort Jackson soldier who collapsed after finishing a two-mile run died of an overheated body temperature.
The Richland County Coroner's office says 35-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Clayton Hughes died Friday after collapsing the day before at the end of a physical fitness test. Post spokesmen didn't provide his hometown.
A statement by Fort Jackson didn't describe when the training run took place on Thursday. The high temperature Thursday in nearby Columbia was about 100 degrees, with local humidity making it feel even hotter.
Fort Jackson officials say Hughes was attending a leadership course for senior non-commissioned officers. Post officials say he became woozy, began to lose his balance at the end of the two-mile run and was given emergency treatment after finishing.
