Joint Base Lewis-McChord officials identified a man fatally shot by Lacey police as a soldier.

The Olympian reports Wednesday an autopsy revealed 26-year-old Kerry Brown, a sergeant with six years of service, died of a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Brown was shot by an officer after police responded to calls of Brown acting erratically at his home. His wife locked herself and three children in a bathroom as Brown reportedly fired gunshots inside their residence. By the time officers arrived, Brown was in the street, where he fired one shot from a handgun and ran behind a building. When he reappeared with the gun, he was shot.

According to Army officials, Brown served in an elite helicopter unit that carries special operations troops to dangerous places on the battlefield. Brown was a logistics specialist assigned to 4th Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. He had been with the battalion for five years, and served a total of 14 months, over multiple deployments, in Iraq and Afghanistan.
