Staff Sgt. Jeremy Gaynor's performance will air during one of the show's three remaining "blind audition" episodes, set for March 2, 3 and 9, an NBC spokeswoman confirmed. She would not say which night he will appear.
The blind-audition process features singers performing to the backs of the contest's judges — pop stars Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine, musician/producer Pharrell Williams, and country singer Blake Shelton. Judges can push a button to turn their chairs and claim the performer for their team in the competition. If no judges push a button, the contestant goes home.
NBC does not reveal results of the taped auditions in advance of airing and does not make performers available for media interviews until after their audition is shown.
Gaynor, of Tampa, Florida, performed as a gospel singer before entering service, according to his West Point band online biography, touring with a quartet that eventually became a duo. He enlisted in 2009 and successfully auditioned for the Army Entertainment Detachment in 2010, performing in the globe-touring Soldier Show.
He would serve as production stage manager of the show a year later, helming the 60-soldier troupe. He joined the West Point Band in 2013.
The band announced his "Voice" tryout via Facebook.
Last season's "Voice" featured Bryana Salaz, daughter of Army Col. Ed Salaz, who advanced past the blind audition rounds but was knocked off judge Gwen Stefani's team when the contest moved from 20 singers to 12 in a "live playoff" round.
Before that, active-duty Pfc. Paul Ieti's song stylings earned him a trip to the semifinals of another NBC competition show, "America's Got Talent." The petroleum supply specialist's audition drew a standing ovation and wowed the judges, but he fell in the semifinals when the show made the cut from 24 performers to 12.
