The division identified the deceased soldier as Staff Sgt. Deontae D. Allen, a mortuary affairs specialist assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade, according to a division press release.
The 27-year-old Allen was originally from Kansas City, Missouri. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel after being found.
The cause of death is under investigation, officials said.
Allen joined the Army out of Memphis, Tennessee, in September 2012. After he finished training, Allen was assigned to Fort Lee, Virginia. He was later assigned to 2nd Infantry Division in May 2019.
Allen had deployed twice to Afghanistan, the division release said. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal.
“Staff Sgt. Allen was one of the finest NCOs with which I have served. His dedication to his Soldiers and his duty as a mortuary affairs professional showed through in every interaction,” said Capt. Scott Hallmann, the soldier’s company commander, in a prepared statement.
“His presence will be sorely missed, not only by his Soldiers, but by the company as a whole. He was a blessing to all of us," Hallmann added.
