Fort Drum soldier accused of raping underage person

ROME, N.Y. — Police in central New York say a 26-year-old Fort Drum soldier has been charged with rape.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Office says Spc. Denis Omuriuki was arraigned Friday on a charge of third-degree rape. He's accused of having sexual relations with a person under the age of 17 in Rome between May and September of 2014.

He was taken into custody Thursday at Fort Drum in northern New York and transported to Rome. He was remanded to jail in lieu of $10,000.00 bail.

Police say they were assisted in the investigation by Army authorities at Fort Drum., home of the 10th Mountain Division.

Fort Drum officials say the Brooklyn native joined the Army in October 2012.

It couldn't immediately be determined if Omuriuki had a lawyer.
