When it comes to sweating out promotion board results, the angst experienced by mid-career Regular Army officers definitely does not apply to the Active Guard and Reserve (Army Reserve) captains who competed for advancement to major this year.

While the Army does not provide selection totals for the separate categories of the APL board, a consolidated selection list contains the names of 1,536 National Guard and Army Reserve officers.

A summary of statistics generated by the annual board that met in March shows the primary-zone select rate for AGR captains was 96 percent, while 9 percent of the below-zone officers were picked for accelerated advancement to O-4.

The select rate for above-zone captains passed over in 2014 was 60 percent, an exceptionally high mark.

Select rates for the non-AGR officers considered by the board were not nearly as impressive, with the National Guard members experiencing a 78 percent primary-zone rate and a 52 percent above-zone rate.

As is normal, National Guard captains were not authorized a below-zone category.

The primary-zone select rate for non-AGR Army Reserve captains was 65 percent, while the BZ rate was 3 percent. The pickup rate for previously considered above-zone officers was 32 percent.
