A paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division died Thursday in a private residence in Fayetteville, North Carolina, officials announced Sunday.

Spc. Samuel Shaaheed, 29, was a culinary specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 407th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

The circumstances surrounding Shaaheed's death are under investigation by the Fayetteville Police Department.

Shaaheed, who was from Whittier, California, joined the Army in August 2012. He was assigned to the 82nd Airborne since March 2013.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

"Spc. Samuel Shaaheed was a paratrooper who proudly served our Army and our nation," said Lt. Col. Jeremy Mushtare, deputy commander of 2nd BCT. "As a culinary specialist, he served hundreds of our paratroopers on a daily basis. We mourn his loss and express sincere gratitude to him and his family for his dedicated service to the 82nd Airborne Division and 2nd Brigade Combat Team."
