New Jersey governor swears in new adjutant general

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has sworn in three new members of his Cabinet.

Murphy, a Democrat, delivered the oath of office to the state’s new adjutant general, health commissioner and human services commissioner.

Brig. Gen. Jemal Beale will oversee New Jersey’s roughly 8,400 Army and Air Force National Guard members. Beale will also oversee services for the state’s roughly 350,000 veterans.

Dr. Shereef Elnahal, a former Veterans Affairs official under Barack Obama, was sworn in as New Jersey’s health commissioner.

Carole Johnson, a former Obama White House health adviser, is New Jersey’s newest human services commissioner. Human services is the state’s biggest department by budget expenditures and oversees the state’s Family Care program.

An earlier version of this story misidentified the department Dr. Shereef Elnahal served in under Barack Obama. It was the Department of Veterans Affairs, not Veterans Administration.
