The Senate Armed Services Committee will hold a confirmation hearing Tuesday for Gen. Mark Milley, nominated in May by President Obama to serve as the Army's next chief of staff.

Milley, now head of Army Forces Command, already has received some kind words from the committee's chairman.

"I was briefed by him in Afghanistan, and I've gotten to know him," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told Army Times last month. "I think he's very well-qualified."

If confirmed, Milley would become the 39th Army chief of staff, taking over for Gen. Ray Odierno, whose term in the top job ends in September.

Milley will be the fourth general to face a SASC confirmation panel this month. The senators hosted Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, in line to become the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on July 9, and heard from Air Force Gens. Paul Selva and Darren McDew — up for JCS vice chairman and head of U.S. Transportation Command, respectively — on Tuesday.
