Rice receives Thayer Award at US Military Academy

WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been honored at West Point with the U.S. Military Academy's annual Thayer Award, which is given to an outstanding U.S. citizen for service in the national interest.

The award given Monday at the academy is named for Col. Sylvanus Thayer, the "Father of the Military Academy" who was West Point's fifth superintendent.

Rice is a professor at Stanford University. She was President George W. Bush's secretary of state from 2005 to 2009 — the first African-American woman in that position.

She received the award during a dinner ceremony hosted by the academy's Association of Graduates after cadets conducted a review in her honor.

Past recipients of the Thayer Award include Sandra Day O'Connor, Dwight Eisenhower, Bob Hope and Colin Powell.
