Staff Sgt. Jeremy Gaynor's run on "The Voice" ended Tuesday night, with the West Point Band singer falling to fellow contestant Rob Taylor during one of the NBC singing competition's "battle rounds."

The duo sang the Maroon 5 hit "Animals," and while "Voice" judge/coach/Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine told the audience that Gaynor had done the best job, the decision fell to pop star Christina Aguilera, who felt otherwise.

"We lost the battle but we're not defeated," Gaynor said via Twitter after the show aired. "I will not quit therefore I cannot be defeated."

The staff sergeant's soulful performance of "Superstar" earned him a spot on the show and interest from all four celebrity judges, who select teams for the duration of the contest. He chose Aguilera, who paired him with Taylor on "Animals."

Levine told the audience he was happy to see the contestants tackle the song so they could "share his pain."

"It's a pain in my [expletive]," he said. "It's every single last stitch of my range. And you guys did a great job."

Gaynor, who told Army Times he'd received nothing but support from his commanders and bandmates for taking on the show, received a social media shout-out from his unit after Tuesday's program:
