A new policy that took effect in February expands eligibility for the Special MOS Alignment Promotion Program, which guarantees a promotion to soldiers who switch to shortage military occupational specialties designated by the Army.
While this program does not have a dedicated bonus, soldiers who successfully complete reclassification training will receive a promotion and pay raise.
Previously this program was limited to soldiers of the Regular Army and the Army Reserve component of the Active Guard and Reserve. All components are now authorized to use SMAPP as an incentive to balance their MOS inventories at the ranks of sergeant and staff sergeant.
The most recent version of SMAPP authorizes promotions to sergeant for Regular Army soldiers who qualify for reclassification to:
•12P (prime power production specialist)
•29E (electronic warfare specialist)
•35L (counterintelligence agent)
•46R (broadcast specialist).
Promotions to staff sergeant are authorized for soldiers who reclassify to:
• 51C (contracting NCO)
•25D (cyber network defender)
•25E (electromagnetic spectrum manager).
