The system designed to protect aircraft housed in a Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield hangar went off Tuesday around 8:45 a.m. when it "was being reset after the cover of a manual alarm box was accidentally dislodged," 10th Mountain Division spokesman Lt. Col. Don Korpi said via email.
The result: 8 feet of foam covering a half-dozen helicopters.
The accidental activation, first reported by WWNY-TV, was a first for Fort Drum, Korpi said. Clean-up crews used water to wash away the foam, and "fire guards" are on scene in case of a spark while the suppression system is refilled.
The UH-60s belong to 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, which has 50 Black Hawks among its 116 helicopters, according to the unit's website.
