Army vet Tibor Rubin, MOH recipient and Holocaust survivor, dies at 86

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. — Tibor Rubin, a Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor who joined the U.S. Army after his liberation from the Nazis and earned the Medal of Honor for heroism in the Korean War, has died in California.

Rubin's nephew, Robert Huntly, tells the Los Angeles Times that Rubin died of natural causes Saturday in Garden Grove. He was 86.

Huntly says his uncle never lost his sense of humor despite a tragic personal history. Rubin's parents and younger sister died in the Holocaust.

President George W. Bush presented Rubin with the Medal of Honor in 2005. He singlehandedly defended a hill for 24 hours and saved the lives of as many as 40 of his fellow prisoners of war in a North Korean camp.

Rubin is survived by his wife and two children.
