Two officers with 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command died in an April 6 car wreck near Landstuhl, Germany, the Army announced late last week.

Capts. Brandon W. Fuhrman and Douglas J. Wercinski were declared dead at the scene, the service said in a news release. Both served as plans officers, and both had made multiple war-zone deployments: Fuhrman to Iraq in 2010 and Afghanistan in 2013, and Wercinski to Iraq in 2009 and Afghanistan in 2013.

Stars and Stripes reported that German police found the soldiers' BMW down an embankment off a county road, with one of the men having been thrown from the vehicle. The police could not determine who was driving at the time of the crash, according to the newspaper.

Fuhrman, 29, joined the Army in 2008. He earned the Bronze Star Medal along with other awards and decorations, according to the release, as well as a Ranger tab, according to an obituary published in his Pennsylvania hometown's newspaper. He's survived by his wife and 9-month-old daughter.

An online memorial fund for Fuhrman, with proceeds going to programs helping soldiers battling post-traumatic stress, has received more than $4,100 in donations in two days.

Wercinski, 31, joined the service a year before Fuhrman. The Texas native also earned a Bronze Star Medal as well as other awards and honors.

The crash remains under investigation, the Army news release states.
