Fort Stewart soldier shot and killed while home for the holidays

Authorities are searching for suspects in the New Year’s Eve shooting of a Fort Stewart, Georgia-based soldier who was home on leave in Michigan over the holidays.

Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III, 23, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on Monday night, according to a release from the St. Joseph’s Township police department.

The soldier was transported to a local hospital where he died of his wounds. The shooting is under investigation, the release said.

Hassel had just made a permanent change-of-station move in December from Fort Carson, Colorado, to join 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart spokeswoman Dina McKain told Army Times on Wednesday.

Hassel enlisted in 2015 as wheeled vehicle mechanic, McKain said.

“Everybody loved him,” Tyrone Hassel Jr., the soldier’s father, told Fox 17. “Nobody hated him that I can think of. I don’t know why this happened.”

The younger Hassel and his wife had just left his father’s home around 11 p.m. when Kemia Hassel called to say that Tyrone had been shot, his father said.

Hassel is survived by his wife and their son. Authorities are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call the St. Joseph Township Police Department at 269-429-6890, or Berrien County Crimestoppers at 1-800-342-STOP.
