A congresswoman wrote a letter pressing the case for a Fort Cashe based upon Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe's ties to the community and selfless sacrifice. Two of the three soldiers were recognized posthumously. Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe will be the first Black U.S. service member to receive the Medal of Honor since Vietnam. The three soldiers will be honored in the coming weeks. The 3rd Infantry Division renamed its ceremonial garden after Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe, an Iraq War hero. Cashe's family could receive the award in the next few months. Cashe died in 2005 from injuries sustained while trying to save his men from a burning Bradley Fighting Vehicle, Advocates had hoped the Senate would pass legislation related to the honor before leaving on their election break.
