A renaming commission has about 100 choices to rename nine Army installations. A congresswoman wrote a letter pressing the case for a Fort Cashe based upon Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe's ties to the community and selfless sacrifice. Two of the three soldiers were recognized posthumously. On Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021, Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe will be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in recognition of his actions in Iraq in 2005. By Michael J. Tarpey

Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe will be the first Black U.S. service member to receive the Medal of Honor since Vietnam. The three soldiers will be honored in the coming weeks. Duane Dewey received the Medal of Honor in 1953. The 3rd Infantry Division renamed its ceremonial garden after Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe, an Iraq War hero.
