As global operations heat up and personnel costs rise, the U.S. Army is grappling to modernize and take care of its people within a flat FY25 budget. This is the third helicopter crash for the Guard since Feb. 12. The Army is seeking approval for its short-range air defense requirements, which will solidify a program of record for the rapidly developed capability. Amid budget challenges, the Army is looking at in-house solutions to address pay, recruiting and quality-of-life concerns. Post officials are working an a host of short- and long-term solutions to decadeslong infrastructure issues. Much of DOD housing was developed before 1970 and is either woefully outdated or falling apart. The Army's plan to cancel its Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft was a surprise, but not a mistake, according to some defense experts. If no one is held accountable for barracks conditions, that's part of the problem. Machine gunners and snipers can "walk" rounds on target at long ranges with the optic.
