Thousands of federal employees could be reinstated to their government jobs following the ruling. An internal memo instructs top-level Veterans Affairs staff to prepare for an agency-wide reorganization in August. In a memo, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that all employees will receive a new request for a five-point summation of their weekly accomplishments. The bill is unlikely to advance in the Republican-controlled House but shows how Democrats are trying to harness public backlash to DOGE. Veterans accounted for 30% of the federal workforce in 2021. "These veterans are now being told their skills are no longer useful," the VFW commander said. In his first public address to a veterans group, Doug Collins outlined plans to broaden VA benefits and cut back bureaucracy. The Defense Department, which is the largest government agency, says it's reducing its civilian workforce by 5% to 8%. Hegseth promised to reinvest budget savings in other military programs and jettison civilian workers who are not living up to expectations.
