AFRICOM has completed six airstrikes in Somalia since 2021 began, three of which occurred since a majority of troops in Somalia were relocated earlier this month.
The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and embarked 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit — consisting of nearly 5,000 sailors and Marines — are now operating off the coast of Somalia.
The strikes come days after the Pentagon unveiled plans to remove a “majority” of the 700 U.S. troops currently in Somalia from the country and relocate them.
Without providing details, the Pentagon said in a short statement that “a majority” of U.S. troops and assets in Somalia will be withdrawn in early 2021.

No country has been involved in Somalia's future as much as the United States. The Trump administration is contemplating the withdrawal of the several hundred U.S. military troops from the nation, but some experts say it would come at the worst possible time.
