Eager for changes at the Department of Veterans Affairs, President Donald Trump toyed early on with issuing an executive order to close parts of the VA health system without consulting Congress, according to an upcoming book by his former VA secretary. Only eight months into the job, VA Secretary Robert Wilkie's moves now could define his department for generations to come. The new report finds a host of issues with ethics, operations and management. A news report found senior VA officials opposed plans for a forceful statement against white nationalism in the wake of the Charlottesville riots. Wilkie defended the practice as necessary research to help veterans. In the last year, the Department of Veterans Affairs has seen big successes and even bigger controversies. Four former VA leaders are urging lawmakers to reject the plan, while former VA Secretary David Shulkin is arguing for it.
