The application window is about to close on several career broadening opportunities for officers and NCOs at U.S. and overseas institutions in 2017-18.
The deadline for the scholarships, fellowships and internships is Dec. 30. Programs range from 12 months to nearly four years, with most beginning in the summer of 2017.
Selections will be made by a board that meets in May, with the results to be being announced in August.
The educational and career-enhancing opportunities include:
Congressional Fellowships 2018 – A demanding 44-month regimen of academics and high-level staff assignments for active and reserve majors, captains and senior NCOs. Initially soldiers will pursue a master's degree in legislative affairs from George Washington University, followed by service on the staff of a member of Congress or a congressional committee.
Pentagon Internships 2017 – A three-year, three-phase master's degree program for up to 20 basic-branch captains conducted at the Public Policy Institute of Georgetown University and Pentagon staff agencies, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Army Staff.
Olmstead Scholar Program 2017 – A two-year graduate studies program for basic-branch captains and junior majors at a non-English speaking university outside the U. S. Language training in preparation for graduate school will begin in the summer or fall of 2017.
Downing Scholarships 2017 – A West Point Association-sponsored program that provides captains and majors with an opportunity to study terrorism and counterterrorism at top-tier universities in the U. S. and overseas. Studies begin in the fall of 2017.
Marshall Center Fellowships 2017-18 – A 12-month study and research program for majors and lieutenant colonels at the Marshall Center, Garmisch, Germany. Applicants must have credit for Intermediate Level Education and hold a graduate degree.
Asia-Pacific Fellowships 2017-18 – A 12-month study and research program for majors and lieutenant colonels at the Asia-Pacific Security Studies Center, Honolulu, Hawaii. Applicants must have credit for Intermediate Level Education and hold a graduate degree.
Arroyo Center Fellowship 2017-18 – A 12-month program that allows field-grade officers to serve as team members on projects of the Rand Arroyo Center, Santa Monica, California, the Army's principal research and development facility for policy analysis.
Army G3 Harvard Strategists – A three-year program for captains and junior majors to earn a graduate degree at Harvard, and then serve a 24-month tour as a strategist at the Pentagon. Officers who complete the program will be designated in functional area 59 (strategic plans and policy) and awarded additional skill identifier 6Z (strategist).
