Wounded warrior found dead at Fort Sam Houston, prompting brief lockdown

A service member was found dead on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Monday night.

The service member has not been identified, pending notification of his next of kin. But Joe Bela, a spokesman for the 502nd Air Base Wing there, said the service member was assigned there as a wounded warrior. Bela said the service’s member’s branch of service was not yet clear.

The service member was found dead shortly after 10 p.m., the 502nd said in a release. A suspicious device was found near the body, which prompted a lockdown of the installation. Bela said that officials who responded did not want to move the body at first, because they feared the device might by explosive.

But by 11:30 p.m., security forces had determined it was not explosive and the lockdown was lifted.

The release said no foul play is suspected, and the death is being investigated.

Bela would not say where the service member was found, but said it was not in his residence.
