FORT JACKSON, S.C. – The Army’s toughest trainers are competing in the Drill Sergeant of the Year competitions at Fort Jackson.
Army spokeswoman Stephanie Slater says about 15 representatives from a variety of Army installations compete in about 40 events.
They are being tested in a wide range of physical and academic tasks used to turn civilians into soldiers.
A winner is chosen from the active duty ranks and another for the Army Reserve. A third is chosen among platoon sergeants from the service's advanced training schools.
The competition is held Monday through Thursday at the Army's largest training installation located outside Columbia.
The Army has about 2,200 drill sergeants and 600 platoon sergeants that educate some 120,000 soldiers in the Army every year.
