German police shot a U.S. soldier once in each leg after he attacked a patient and police in a hospital, a German police officer confirmed to Military Times.
NBC reported Friday that the soldier was transported to a hospital on Thursday after injuring his head while celebrating at Oktoberfest in Munich. At the hospital, the soldier reportedly ripped three fire extinguishers off a wall and attacked an 89-year-old patient before being shot in the legs by police.
Reached by phone on Friday, a German police officer in Munich said the soldier was shot in the legs after attacking the patient and police. The soldier has undergone an operation and his injuries are not life-threatening. The officer did not have any more information.
The soldier's name has not been released. He is stationed in Vilseck, near Grafenwoehr, Germany, said Bruce Anderson, spokesman with U.S. Army Europe.
The incident is under investigation.
"Whether or not he faces disciplinary action remains to be seen," Anderson said via email.
