Applications are being accepted from qualified enlisted soldiers of the active and reserve components who want to train and be appointed as Veterinary Corps food safety warrant officers, MOS 640A.
The application deadline for the fiscal 2016 accessions program is July 17. A selection board is tentatively scheduled to convene Aug. 11 at Recruiting Command headquarters, Fort Knox, Ky.
Selectees will attend the six-week Warrant Officer Candidate Course at Fort Rucker, Ala., in the late winter of 2016, and the 30-day Veterinary Corps Food Safety Warrant Officer Basic Course, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, in the early spring of 2016.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be in the rank of promotable sergeant, or higher, and be a graduate of the Advanced Leader Course no later than July 17, 2015.
- Hold MOS 68R (veterinarian food inspection specialist) or 68S (preventive medicine specialist) as their primary specialty for at least five years, but no more than 12 years.Regardless of MOS, applicants must have documented experience performing food safety-related tasks.
Waivers are authorized for applicants who do not hold the feeder MOS, but who are experienced in food safety matters, and for applicants who hold a bachelor's or master's degree, who have completed at least 30 hours studies in the biological sciences, food technology, epidemiology, public health or fields that relate to warrant MOS 640A.
Warrant officers who hold MOS 640A serve as a commander's subject matter expert on all matters dealing with food safety and defense.
During their first duty station, active component officers typically are assigned to an Army Medical Command public health command district where they conduct sanitation audits of commercial food suppliers and manage food safety, defense and quality assurance programs.
Most reserve officers initially are assigned to non-tactical veterinary detachments, or as staff officers with non-deployable medical brigades or groups.
