Fort Hood, Texas, officials on Monday released the name of a 29-year-old staff sergeant found dead Thursday in Killeen from an apparent gunshot wound that local police have classified as self-inflicted.

Staff Sgt. Kevin Darnell Lewis, 29, was declared dead at 8:20 a.m. Thursday morning, according to a Fort Hood news release. His death remains under investigation, the release states.

A Killeen Police Department spokeswoman would not provide any details on the incident, including where Lewis' body was found, saying such information was not made publicly available in cases of self-inflicted wounds.

Lewis had served with 3rd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, since January 2014, the release states. The 10-year soldier deployed twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and once in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His awards and honors include five Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals and the Combat Infantry Badge, according to the release.

Lewis' death is the third reported by Fort Hood officials in about a month: Sgt. Derek Pagan died April 26 as the result of a hit-and-run incident in Austin, and Sgt. 1st Class Robert Lee Jones Jr. died April 13 in an apparent drowning.
