A wide range of career broadening opportunities at U.S. and overseas institutions is available for officers, warrant officers and senior NCOs of the active and reserve components in 2017-18, the Army announced.
The application deadline for several of the programs is Dec.30. Many of the fellowships are 12 months long, beginning in the summer of 2017.
Here are details of the programs:
Pentagon internships 2017
The program: The Joint Chiefs of Staff, Office of the Secretary of Defense and Army Staff Internship Program is a three-year, three-phase master's degree regimen conducted at the Public Policy Institute of Georgetown University and Pentagon staff agencies. Upon earning a degree in policy management, officers will spend the second year assigned to the Joint Staff or Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the third year as a member of the Army Staff.
Who can apply: The internships are available to captains of the Army Competitive Category in year groups 2008-2011 who have completed the Captains Career Course, and have served a key developmental assignment for their branch or functional area.
Deadline: Application packets must be received by Dec. 30. A board scheduled for May 10-13, 2016, will recommend up to 20 officers for an admissions review by Georgetown. Final selections will be announced in August 2016.
Olmsted Scholar Program 2017
The program: Selected active component officers with three to 11 years of service will pursue two years of graduate studies at a non-English speaking university overseas. Language training in preparation for graduate school attendance will begin in the summer or fall of 2017.
Who can apply: Officers must have completed at least one key developmental assignment at the time they apply for the program. Captains must have completed the Captains Career Course by April 2016.
Applicants must be members of one of the following career fields: Infantry, Engineer, Field Artillery, Air Defense, Aviation, Special Forces, Armor, Signal, Electronic Warfare, Information Operations, Military Police, Strategic Intelligence, Military Intelligence, Psychological Operations, Civil Affairs, Space Operations, Chemical or Logistics.
Deadline: Application packets must be received at the Human Resources Command by Dec. 30, 2015. Fifteen candidates will be selected by a board that meets May 10-13, 2016. Downing Scholarship Program 2017
The program: Sponsored by the West Point Association, the Gen. Wayne Downing Scholarship Program provides selected captains and majors of the active component with an opportunity to study terrorism and counterterrorism at top-tier graduate schools in the U. S. and overseas.
Participating universities include: Columbia, Georgetown, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Tufts, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Kings College London, St. Andrews Scotland, Queens College Northern Ireland, Lauder School of Government Israel and Nanyang Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Singapore.
Who can apply: Applicants must be members of one of the following career fields: Infantry, Engineer, Field Artillery, Air Defense, Aviation, Special Forces, Armor, Information Operations, Military Police, Psychological Operations, Civil Affairs or Chemical.
Deadline: Applications must be received at HRC by Dec. 30. Fifteen candidates will be nominated by a board that meets May 10-13. Final selections will be made by the West Point Association, and announced in August 2016. Officers will begin studies in the summer or fall of 2017.
Marshall Center Fellowship 2017-2018
The program: The 12-month George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies Fellowship will begin in the summer of 2017 at Garmisch, Germany.
During the fellowship year the selected officer will spend 15 weeks participating in the center's Defense and Security Studies Program. The balance of the year will be spent as a faculty member conducting research or other activities related to the center's mission of supporting eastern and central European countries transition to democracy and free-market economies.
Who can apply: Applicants must be in the ranks of major or lieutenant colonel (year group 2002 or earlier), have credit for Intermediate Education, have a graduate college degree and be able to conduct research into areas of national security policy.

Asia-Pacific Center Security Studies Fellowship 2017-2018
The program: This 12-month fellowship will begin in the summer of 2017 at Honolulu, Hawaii.
During the fellowship year, the selected officer will attend the center's 12-week study program, followed by an assignment to the research division where the officer typically will participate in lectures, seminars, study groups, conferences and other educational activities.
Who can apply: Applicants must be in the ranks of major or lieutenant colonel (year group 2002 or earlier), have credit for Intermediate Education, have a graduate college degree and be able to conduct research into areas of national security policy.

Arroyo Center Fellowship 2017-2018
The program: Scheduled for one year beginning in the summer of 2017, these fellowships allow field-grade officers of the active and reserve components to serve as team members on projects of the Rand Arroyo Center, Santa Monica, California, the Army's principal research and development facility for policy analysis.
Who can apply: Applicants must be majors or lieutenant colonels with no more than 19 years of service who have completed Intermediate Level Education and who hold a graduate degree from an accredited institution. Reserve officers must have a mandatory removal date of Sept. 1, 2021, or later.

Army G-3 Harvard Strategists
The program: Selected officers will attend Harvard University to earn a master's degree in public administration and then serve a two-year assignment as a strategist in the Office of the Army G-3 or Chief of Army Reserve. Officers who complete the program will be designated in career field FA 59 (strategic plans and policy) and awarded ASI 6Z (strategist).
Who can apply: This program is open to captains of the active component in year groups 2004-2008, and Army Reserve O-3s with dates of rank of Jan. 1, 2011, through Dec. 31, 2014. Junior Army Reserve majors also may apply if they will have fewer than 18 months' time in grade on July 1, 2017.
Deadline: The application deadline is Dec. 30. Officers will be screened to compete for the program by the Human Resources Command, with final selections being made and announced by the Office of the Army G-3 in June 2016.
