The Army is investigating the death of a paratrooper assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division who died in his barracks on Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Saturday evening.

Spc. Carlton Butler, 22, was an infantryman assigned to B Company, 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, according to Army officials.

In a statement, officials said the circumstances surrounding Butler’s death are under investigation.

“Carlton was an energetic and motivated paratrooper,” said Lt. Col. Graham White, commander of 2nd Battalion, 505th PIR. “Our thoughts now turn to his family and fellow paratroopers.”

Butler was from North Miami Beach, Florida. He joined the Army in June 2014 and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in December of that same year.
