An American soldier was killed Thursday in South Korea after a truck hit him and another car that had pulled over to the side of a highway.

The soldier was driving a U.S. military vehicle when it was first rear-ended by another car on an interchange, according to Stars and Stripes. After the soldier left the vehicle to inspect the damage, an 8-ton cargo truck slammed into him and the two parked vehicles, the regional fire service told Stars and Stripes.

The collision occurred on a highway northwest of Camp Humphreys at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the news report.

Camp Humphreys is located within the seaport city of Pyeongtaek, on South Korea’s western coast.

The soldier was a member of the 8th Army’s 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, according to the news report. That unit is stationed at Osan Air Base, about 12 miles north of Camp Humphreys.

The soldier’s identity won’t be released until the family has been notified.

“Medical aid was provided on the scene until the soldier was transported via ambulance to the Good Morning Hospital,” the 8th Army said in a statement. “The incident is under investigation.”

Another individual was injured, officials told Stars and Stripes. It’s unclear whether the other person was a civilian or another U.S. soldier.

Photos sent to Stars and Stripes from the Gyeonggi-do Fire Service show what appears to be a camouflaged Humvee flipped on its side amid debris from another smashed vehicle.
