A Memphis man who was getting ready to join the Army was shot while sleeping in his bed.

Action News 5 in Tennessee reported that Wartario Franklin Jr. died on Tuesday after someone opened fire on his family’s house.

Franklin’s mother, Lutissue Marshall, said he was supposed to undergo a physical for his Army application that same day, the news site reported.

“He was getting ready to join the Army,” she told Action News 5. “He was ready to get out of Memphis and take care of this family. That’s all he talked about.”

Marshall said the sound of gunfire woke her up around 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday. When she checked on her three children, Franklin said he had been shot.

The recent high school graduate died in his mother’s arms.

The window to his bedroom was riddled with bullet holes, according to the news site.

Marshall said the shooter or shooters removed the screen from the window before firing.

No suspect has been named yet in the shooting.
