BURLINGTON, Vt. — The commander of the Vermont Army National Guard has retired.

WCAX-TV reports Brig. Gen. Michael Heston retired Sunday.

Heston has served as the commander since 2014, and he did three deployments to Afghanistan.

He says of his command that he "tried to make the best decisions I can for the organization."

Brig. Gen. Rich Lebel has been appointed as the new commander.
