An Army officer who was formerly in charge of military police and firefighters at U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart will spend 18 months in prison and be dishonorably discharged for choking his wife, according to Stars and Stripes.

Maj. Jay Guerrero, who had been the Germany-based installation’s provost marshal, pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated assault.

During an argument in late July 2017, according to testimony, Guerrro grabbed his wife, Daisy, by the throat, then later put her in a chokehold until she blacked out.

Daisy Guerrero, in a statement to the judge, said she felt she wouldn’t survive the attack.

Jay Guerrero testified that his wife had refused to let him kiss her the day of the argument, and, feeling rejected, he couldn’t control his emotions.

He squeezed her neck until he could feel “her legs going weak,” Stripes reported.

Guerrero faced up to three years in prison.
