A soldier assigned to U.S. Army Alaska died in Fairbanks Saturday evening from a gunshot wound, the command announced Monday evening.

The soldier, Pfc. Jeremiah Matthew Wombacher, was a cavalry scout assigned to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division’s 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, officials said in a press release.

Army Alaska officials did not say how the gunshot wound was inflicted on Wombacher.

“Jeremiah was an outstanding Soldier and an essential part of this squadron,” Lt. Col. Aaron Mock, 5-1 Cavalry commander, said in a statement.

“This is an extremely sad time for the organization and we send our deepest condolences to his family and friends who are struggling with his loss," Mock added. “He will be deeply missed.”

The 22-year-old soldier was from Warrenton, Missouri.

He joined the Army in March 2018 and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia, before reporting to Alaska in July 2018.

Wombacher’s awards included the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

The incident is under investigation by the Fairbanks Police Department.

A photograph of Wombacher was not immediately available.
