A former Princeton University hockey player will be honored by the American Hockey Coaches Association in April for his off-ice endeavors — among them, serving as the Army's top officer.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, Princeton Class of 1980, will receive the Lou Lamoriello Award during top-tier college hockey's national championship weekend, also known as the Frozen Four, on April 8 in Tampa, Florida. The award goes to a former college hockey player or coach in recognition of a "unique and distinguished professional career," according to a news release announcing the honor.

"I have lived by the motto 'to win and win by the rules' whether on the ice rinks of my youth, at Princeton, or on the battlefield," Milley said in the release. "Hockey taught me the values of teamwork, perseverance and sacrifice."

Milley earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Princeton before obtaining master's degrees from Columbia University and the Naval War College. He spoke at his undergraduate alma mater on Saturday during its Alumni Day festivities, accepting the Woodrow Wilson Award for his service to the nation.

After joking about being "in the half of the class that made the top half possible," according to a Princeton.edu report, Milley said he was "a proud Princetonian in the nation's service for a cause much greater than myself."
