A teenager who killed a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife during a burglary has been given back-to-back life sentences, each with the possibility of parole after 40 years.

The Gazette reports 19-year-old Macyo Joelle January was sentenced Wednesday for the Jan. 14, 2013, deaths of Staff Sgt. David Dunlap and Whitney Butler. January, who was 17 at the time of the crime but was tried as an adult, also was given two 32-year sentences for the burglary.

Dunlap and Butler were killed after they went to their Colorado Springs home to check on a security system that went off.

January argued he happened upon the scene after the newlyweds were killed.

District Judge Deborah Grohs, in sentencing January, said the facts of the case "do not call for leniency in any regard."
