U.S. soldiers are marching across Romania in a 400-kilometer trek to kick off multinational exercises in that country.

The exercises are part of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

Soldiers with 2nd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, began Operation Cavalry March on Tuesday. More than 300 soldiers and 100 combat vehicles are taking part in the march, which officials say is a demonstration of NATO's ability to freely move within the region.

Along the way, soldiers stopped in the city of Ploiesti, Romania, and gave local residents a look at combat vehicles including a Stryker and Apache attack helicopter. An estimated 2,000 people came to see the soldiers, Army officials said in a release.

Cavalry March partners the U.S. Army with Romanian Land Forces and the Romanian government.

The march is expected to end Thursday at the Cincu Training Area, after the squadron takes part in two other community events: a wreath-laying ceremony at a World War II memorial and a welcome ceremony near the end of the march.

The Army released videos and photos from the march and Ploesti event on Wednesday.
